Introduction:

New LED technology lighting units are appearing in increasing numbers as more reliable replacements for the original bulb equipped marker lights, rear lights and side "hazard" lights on second generation DMU cars. This page illustrates the types found at York station during an early April 2012 visit.

These may form the subject of future lighting updates on the OO gauge model fleet.

Class 150:

Two Northern Rail Class 150/2 pairs were conveniently coupled together. One had an original lighting fit, while the other was equipped with updated LED lighting. The close-up photos below show the differences:

Original

Old style light fittings with rear lights inboard and

rectangular (yellow) marker lights outboard

New

New lighting with LED combined marker/rear lights inboard

When in marker light mode, the lights are white

Original Black light housings at the other end

Class 158:

An original Northern Rail Class 158 pair is compared with an updated Three car 158 with a mix of new and old lights.

Class 220 an 221 Voyager units:

I'm not sure if the early Voyager units had LED lighting when built, but all those seen passing through York in early April 2012 had LED rear, marker and hazard lighting units:

Separate LED rear lights and marker lights

can be seen within the Voyager light housings.

Voyager hazard light units are fitted

near the centre of each car on both sides

Other DMUs:

I'll add photos of other units as I come across them, but for now:

(I think all) Class 144 units have LED combined rear/marker lights incorporated into twin two lens light housings in each end car.

Some Class 153 units have LED combined rear/marker lights incorporated into twin two lens light housings in each end car (as shown in another page on this website).

Some Class 156 units have LED combined rear/marker lights incorporated into twin two lens light housings in each end car.
