Model Railway DCC , Lighting & Sound Conversions

A collection of projects that add  DCC decoders, improved lighting and more recently, sound systems, to U.K. based OO gauge locomotives and DMUs.

Also some specialised rolling stock conversions, creating Network rail test trains and MOD nuclear flask carriers.

The quality and accuracy of current "off the shelf" OO gauge U.K. model rail locomotives is (with very few exceptions) outstanding. However, further enhancements and added interest can still be achieved in the areas of DCC control, more comprehensive lighting and the addition of sound. This website describes in some detail a number of projects that I have undertaken since retirement in support of a planned PC controlled layout in our loft, which is finally taking shape. Also, to provide rolling stock support for our developing village layout, which represents Histon village station from LNER days in the 30s to its closure in more recent times.

Current & recent projects appear directly below, while further down, earlier work is arranged in loco class order. The website is intended to share ideas with other enthusiasts and to document the projects. Its all non-commercial hobby work, as I take far too long to complete projects to make a business out of it....

If you would like to discuss the projects below or share your own conversion work experiences, the name is Martin & I can be emailed at:  duxfordupdate@gmail.com

Hatton's Sound fitted Class 66 is evaluated and refined

After a year of waiting, Hatton's spin on the ubiquitous class 66 arrived just as Corona virus lock down put us into self isolation. After a further 3 days quarantine before I dared open the package, was it worth the wait???

You bet it was!!!  This is a superb model..... its not without its issues, but having worked through the problems and found solutions for all of them, this is without doubt, my best Class 66.

With Bif's LokSound V5 and EM2 speaker designed in, this time I pushed the boat out and ordered a sound fitted model.

In fact I still had a bit of work to do plus a bit of fun adding even more functionality to the already fairly comprehensive lighting arrangements. Click on the photo on the left to see how I got on.....

New ESU LokSound V5 fitted to old Class 66

Bachmann Class 66 66745 acts as a test vehicle for my first experience of the LokSound V5.

The Legomanbiffo V5 replaces his much earlier V4.

A new comprehensive lighting arrangement makes good use of  the many additional function outputs of the V5 21 pin decoder. A zener protected 6800uF supercap provides the new stay-alive capability.

The original fuel tank mounted 20x40mm 4 ohm speaker is retained.

................Some thoughts

Interfacing Hornby common negative lighting PCBs with a controlling DCC Decoder

Prompted after some questions from a fellow enthusiast

NMRA compliant DCC decoders use a common positive function output. Unfortunately many Hornby locos use a common negative connection on their lighting PCBs. This page shows how I normally interface these two apparently non-compatible arrangements.....

Complete .....

The Class 66 Zimo Trio:

Refining hardware and CV programming on all 3 of my Zimo 66s  to get them all at the same build standard, including Paul's new '66 Protodrive sound project.

The GBRF unit has its speaker moved to the fuel tank and a detonator flash LED added. Double strobe circuits are added for yard movements. Some more radical circuit mods are needed to get the lights to behave exactly as required.

The original Class 66 web pages below have also now been updated, to reflect current thinking.

Colas Class 66 Heavy Freight Loco

66846 In Colas livery, produced by Bachmann

A Zimo based sound system with Paul's new drive system will be added when available, with a new speaker mounting arrangement in the fuel tank. The missing lower marker lights and night headlights are fitted. The lights at each end are made independently switchable via DCC. A detonator flash LED is added next to the right hand front wheel, as Paul has provided the corresponding sound function in the new Zimo. The story continues in the "66 Zimo Trio" page above.

The Colas 66 (with a temporary decoder) has a bit part in the 150/2 video below

Something Completely Different!

Couldn't resist Hornby's P2...... A Gresley locomotive class that has intrigued me for years!

To make it contemporary, 2001 Cock O' The North has become 2007 "Prince of Wales".

Period lights are fitted, but shortcomings in the motor control of Hornby's TTS decoder prompted its replacement by a Zimo decoder equipped with a Digitrains sound project by Paul Chetter.

Some background issues:

Magnetic Sound Control Experiment

A Hall Effect switch and small magnet are tested together, on the bench.

The Hall effect device is then fitted to a Class 66 locomotive and magnets are fitted to the test track.

The Zimo decoder switch input will be used to trigger wheel flange squeal at the beginning of tight curves, but on the test track, a toot on the horn is good enough to prove the concept!

Not something you can do easily with a LokSound decoder....... as far as I know!

A bit of basic information on LEDs

Aimed at model rail DCC applications

LEDs have become the favourite way to add lighting to model rail projects.

They are small, relatively bright and extremely efficient.

This summary shows some of the techniques that can be used.

Hope it proves useful

Computer Automation

A project to let the P.C. do the fiddly stuff, while I watch...... at least that's the the plan!

A feedback based computer control system is planned for the loft layout, using Lenz & LDT  DCC control hardware and Railroad & Co. software. There is quite a learning curve. Click on the image at the left to see progress so far.

Class 57/3, trying a different sound system

In Network Rail livery, produced by Bachmann

This is the second locomotive to have the missing lower marker lights and night headlight added , but this time, a LokSound V4 with a Legomanbiffo sound project is tried, with a downwards facing speaker in the fuel tank moulding. Not quite as convenient as the Zimo solution, as I need to add a supporting FL4 function decoder to obtain a similar degree of lighting control!

Network Rail IOA Bulk ballast wagons

Dapol units pre-weathered for Hattons

These IOA wagons were sourced pre-weathered from Hattons to provide a ballast train for the Network Rail Class 57/3.  Unfortunately, the weathering effects were pure Matt black.......  Spot-on for coal wagons, but not quite right for ballast carriers!

So, in addition to removing paint from the wheels (what a mess!) new pale grey weathering is applied over the top of the original black on the body sides, the bogies are given more normal underside weathering plus a heavy dusting of ballast colour.

Gravel ballast loads are constructed and fitted to each wagon.

Finally, an operational red flashing rear light is fabricated and fitted to the rear wagon.

Class 59/2 Heavy Freight Loco

In DB Schenker livery, a hybrid combining the Hornby body with a much modified Bachmann 66/0 chassis

Class 60 Heavy Freight Diesel

Also the rear lights are made switchable via DCC function control.

Class 67 Multirole 125mph Loco

The new 2012 Hornby model, In DB Schenker livery

The lights are almost OK on the new model. The front markers just need dimming down with a touch of yellow. Also, I'll add a sound decoder with speaker plus a forward cab light. A new circuit will allow the day-night lighting, rear lights and cab light to be switched directly via the DCC controller.
